here is katie's version of the double H (halloween/homecoming) weekend, although it did involve both of us...
good things: the parade is always good we won! undefeated at home halloween costumes- the funniest was the willard preacher but none of you will get that, so i also liked kermit and a penguin and some oompa loompas kelly danced with a cow. introduced to a good drink called an italian surfer in baltimore or sex on the beach italian style in state C and of course us being cowgirls
bad things: the game wasn't so exciting shorter parade and the floats weren't as excitign as usual i tore my fishnets so bad i had to throw them out i lost my phone in sunset park and had to go back through a deserted neighborhood after dark and, sadly, amanda went back to baltimore :-(

You know how they say history repeats itself? Well, I was studying for my history final and read this about Otto von Bismarck:
Bismarck came from a traditional family on his father's side; his mother's family included high-ranking bureacrats and literati of the middle class. At university, the young Bismarck had gambled and womanized, intersted only in a course on the economic foundations of politics. After failing in the civil service, he worked to modernize operations on his landholdings while leading an otherwise loutish life. His marriage to a pious Lutheran woman worked a transformation and gave him new purpose... Establishing Prussia as a respected and dominant power became his cause.
now, what current United States president does that remind you of?

i got a job this summer... well for 4 weeks of it. i'm leading 3 backpacking orientation trips for penn state and have a week of training. it pays a little bit less than i made in all of last summer. and the good news is that i have time to relax and to visit people... although maybe i need people to visit? oh well, it'll be fun.
the semi-commuting between home and state college make a car necessary though... so i need to get one, one that will drive up the 322 hill. if anyone knows someone selling a used car please let me know.
that's my news. today i was imitating a tree and fell in a parking lot, ripping my pants and knee in front of 65 people. wow.

i went bowling tonight with the social studies ed crowd and it was fun. it's nice to finally know people in my major, but i really wish i had taken the block this semester with the rest of them.
i also wish i wasn't so young, there were guys wandering around checking wristbands all night.
and i wish my clothes didn't smell like smoke, but that will motivate me to wash them i guess.
( What did the drummer get on his IQ test? )

i saw some other people post about places they've lived, so here's the katie version...
grandma's house yup, i lived at my grandma's house for the first year and a half or so, and then was there at least twice a year until i was about 14. big brick house with a real attic with stairs and waterslides down the street and we could walk across the street to buy milk.
tyler st lived there til I was 3, and that's where my grandma fell down the stairs and melanie was born (well lived immediatly after she was born). it's an old steel town and we lived next door to the family of a southern Baptist preacher and my mom still talks to them.
ridge rd the best! we had a little house in the country with fruit trees and a dairy with milk in glass bottles next door, and we could get water from a spring. The house was built in the 50s and had a bomb shelter behind the basement. 3 to 5 years old
chicago well plainfield... kindergarden to fourth grade... We lived on a dead end and played kickball and capture the flag more than any other kids in the history of the world. and there was a tornado that really affected most of our living there.
southampton home sweet home, even if it's full :-) i'm really glad we didn't move when bobby was born, because we fit just fine in our house. i remember the first day we moved in.. we immediately named all the trees, and the names still stick.
368 simmons hall after 4 semesters, this counts as a house too. small room is getting old, but it's all right in a pinch. walls covered in posters like we mean it :-)
yup, sorry i made you all scroll down so much but i never learned how to link to the real stuff.

back to school... my classes minus the 2 i haven't had:
anth of american indians (w/ rachel b from high school): i thought it would be awesome, but the teacher sucks. major bummer. physical geog (w/ clayton from trombone choir): nice guy. class has prospects for being interesting. environmental geog (w/ jason the smart hippie): again a great topic w/ a boring teacher. but he at least attempts to be interesting. western civ (don't know anyone): nice teacher, the first talking class... seems all right. book is boringish. world regional geog (w/ jess and half my ss 411 crowd): my saving grace. teacher is also head of women's studies dept, which is irrelevant but interesting, and is nice and interesting and it looks good!
break was good but short. i spent a lot of time babysitting which i like but it really limited my chill-time. i didn't get to see as many people as i wanted to :-/

| PARTY! |
[22 Dec 2004|06:13pm] |
I seriously haven't had a chance to go online since I got home on Thursday (potty training + colds = high maintenance brothers) so here it is:
There is a Christmas Eve eve party at my house, tomorrow night (Thursday), starting at 7:30ish till midnight or so. It will feature the awarding of Kelly's Corny Christmas Trivia trophy, so if you haven't been playing go to dreamalways and answer them all.
AND there will be illegal fireworks from South Carolina, and if you want it there's a huge bottle of vodka that was confiscated from my Uncle Bob at the wedding in South Carolina too (but don't tell my parents that part). Fun time, no?

no matter what i was doing today, it was in the back of my mind. i'm so embarrassed to live in this country right now. the whole world was watching this election, and the vast majority of it wanted Kerry to win. They don't want President Bush. And the American people, or half of them, thought of themselves and their 'personal security' and voted for Bush. It's shaming. People in other countries used to say that they hated the president, not the American people. Who do they hate now?
And that's not even mentioning how much effect this will have on me. I'm so sad.

classes start today. insanity!! so with that comes a quick version of my summer...
It was awesome. I learned so much and met amazing people and had great fun. It was kind of like a glimpse into what my future could be if I worked at an environmental center... they were all so much fun, but well they were adults too. It was like a reassurance that fun doesn't have to end with Girl Scout camp.
I did miss camp though... a lot of the things I learned could really be great at camp and I missed being as absolutely silly and ridiculous as we are there and I missed the people too. The combination of people at camp this summer is prolly never going to happen again.
highlights- I saw 2 rattlesnakes, a bear, a mink, a fox, and a skink. I got to hold a red-tail hawk and have a scar from when she scratched me. I wore a pancake on my head for crazy head day and I played IM softball. My parents came up to visit and camped out and I played with Bobby. I have babysitting jobs lined up with Shaver's Creek people! I went backpacking for 2 weeks with freshmen and I feel like I have a better understanding of how to lead a trip now.
so, it was good. it was fast. i knew it would be. But I'm moved in now and having fun and hanging out with people... I think I already hit a record for the number of people in my room that *I* was talking to/friends with.. but they were my roommate's friends too. It's all good.
And I looked through a huge pile of pictures to pick ones for my wall and just kept laughing. They went from college parties to baptisms and family to high school- prom, band camp, canoeing, scouts... I love pictures.
I love you all too :-)

continuing my once-a-month update...
on office duty today... usually it's quiet on weekends, but today in the pouring rain we had 50 people, including 13 from a camp for 'adjudicated youth' who enjoyed taunting our rattlesnake. it was hectic.
it's rained a lot this summer but it's been fun.
the other day i opened the front door and hit a groundhog with it. kelly is doing a weeklong orientation thing this week and everyone else is bringing her up for it tomorrow. we're going to camp out and it'll be fun. i've missed them all a lot, especially with so many little kids around.
miss you all too. really.

time for me to make an appearance and say hello to everyone :-) i think i'm gonna make a new lj name and layout for myself sometime and then maybe i'll post more...
... but anyway i am sitting at the information desk at shaver's creek, outside of state college, at my summer job. i've been here less than a week, but it's awesome. the people who work here are all incredible, and they know *so* much. the other interns and i are just trying to soak up everything and anything and we all sit around reading field guides to each other. it's nature nerd heaven.
and i got to hold a broad wing hawk yesterday! and a bunch of other animals but that was the exciting one. i have to clean up cages which is a lot of grossness and mouse innards but it's worth it.
where i'm living is awesome too. it's this little house in the woods, and there are 4-7 of us living there depending on the day. it's relaxing and quiet and we only get 1 channel on tv and i love it.
that said, you all can come visit whenever you want. you can go backpacking from our front door. and i'll be home this weekend (18th) for kelly's graduation and grad party.
hearts, katie

there's a poll by the american family association, where people can vote for or against gay marriage... they intend to get an overwhelming majority against it and present the results to congress (when, i don't know).
the funny thing is, supporters of gay marriage are leading in the poll... www.marriagepoll.com. go, vote, laugh.

Last night was super duper fun! Lindsey and I went to the hub, where we watched some ridiculous movie (was it called my boss's daughter?), played computer games, played battleship, drank fake cocktails, made christmas cards and bothered the engineers with their mind games, played mini-golf, made wreaths, and listened to the jazz combos. Yes, we were there for 5 hours. Yes, we are dorks.
And there was a continuous snowfight in my courtyard from 1:00 til after midnight, no joke. I love it when it snows and strangers don't care if you throw snowballs at them! Maybe it will stay cold for a white christmas?
